This year the Remembrance Service was held at 1100 hrs on Friday 3rd June, it was well attended by many veterans and local residents. The welcome was once again read by Reg Blake Royal Marines and the History of the Memorial Seat was read by our new Harbour Master Richard Craven, Captain Johnny Talbot Royal Navy read out the names of the members of the 601 LCM Flotilla who were lost at sea on the 21st July 1944.
The wreath was laid by Mr Christopher Mead-Briggs Chairman of the Itchenor Society and The Last Post was played by a Bugler from The Royal Marines Band Portsmouth. We are grateful to Father Steve Davies of St Anne's East Wittering for standing in for The Reverend John Williams to lead the prayers and read the Exhortation.
Last year we found a couple of black and white photographs taken at the 1951 service at the Memorial Seat, as this was the 60th year we had hoped to create a 'then and now' 60 years apart similar scene with people standing in the same places as the 1951 picture, during the preceding days an attempt was made to find the same focal length lens and take the photograph from the same angle it was at the point that we noticed that at some time the bench must have been moved some 12 feet forward towards the sea as it was impossible to re create the same image, it would appear that the bench was originally positioned out side what is now the doorway to the Harbour Conservancy workshop, as it was we further failed to recreate the scene due to the position of standard bearers who otherwise would have brought their standards down on those who stood in front. Next year the service will be held on Friday 8th June and we look forward to welcoming you all again.
